HISTORY

Intersex South Africa (formerly Intersex Society of South Africa) was founded in 2000 by local intersex activists and their allies. ISSA was created as a response to the needs of intersex South Africans. Since the inception of the organisation ISSA has been responsible for influencing and advocating for policy changes in national legislation in order to reflect the rights of intersex South Africans.

During 2002 Sally Gross and Bernedette Muthien were part of a group of lifelong activists who co-created Engender, an NGO that was registered during 2003. Engender acts as administrative and financial sponsor for ISSA. For more information about Engender: www.engender.org.za .

There are two ways to meet life; you may refuse to care until indifference becomes a habit, a defensive armor, and you are safe — but bored. Or you can care greatly, and live greatly — till life breaks you on its wheel.
— Dorothy Canfield Fisher
